Release date

Starfield does not have a specific release date, though it should be launching in the first half of 2023. T

his is a longer wait than the previously announced date of 11 November 2022, with the company claiming that more time was needed to finish the title.

Starfield will be coming exclusively to PC, Xbox Series X and Series S, and will be available via Xbox Game Pass from day one. This means that it won’t be coming to PS5 or Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

Thanks to the latest 15-minute-long trailer we have a better idea of what the gameplay in Starfield will look like. The game is an open-world RPG and will be playable in both first and third-person.

It looks to have a similar style as No Man’s Sky, with the option to explore multiple planets at your own pace. Bethesda has claimed that there are more than 1000 planets to visit in over 100 solar systems.

It looks like you will be encouraged to explore, as your character is able to traverse any planet with ease, with a few weapons on hand. The trailer shows the protagonist collecting resources and checking out alien creatures on the moon of Kreet, before moving onto an abandoned research lab.

At the lab, we can see the various weapons available. After fighting some of the pirate Crimson Fleet, we can see the Starfield XP progression system in action, which is used to rank up your weapons. We can see the main character using a jetpack to fly across ridges to fight enemies, as well as the same Bethesda mechanic of unlocking rouge weapon cases that are found throughout the world.

There is also a crafting system that can be used to make things like weapons and mods, with the ability to unlock new skills and weapons as you level up. You also have control over your ship, as you will be able to fully customise and design it from the ground up.

Not a whole lot is known about the story right now, but we know that the main character is invited to join Constellation and go to the capital city of New Atlantis. The trailer specifies that this group of people are peacekeepers that are protecting people from the Fleet Star Collective.

Character customisation

Starfield is a single-player title, with the option to completely customise your character, giving players the chance to create whoever they want, whether that be a muscular or long-haired person. There will also be multiple backgrounds made available, all of which come with starting skills. For example, you can become a Beast Hunter, Combat Medic or Cyber Runner.

Starting skills will affect your character, with skills like Pistol Certification giving players 10% more damage, while Robotics deals 10% more damage to robots and turrets. The trailer shows at least 16 different backgrounds, with them all having varying starting skills, showing how diverse your character setup can be.

Alongside starting skills, you can select up to three traits, with at least 16 shown in the trailer. Some traits seem to cancel each other out; having the Introvert trait means you cannot also be an Extrovert, with each trait coming with its own specific advantages and disadvantages.

A look at the traits system

Picking the trait Neon Street Rat, for example, gives you access to special dialogue options and better rewards from Neon. The Spaces trait meanwhile, means that your health and endurance are increased when in space, but decrease when you are on the surface.

This is all we know about Starfield right now, but be sure to keep this page bookmarked, as we’ll be updating it as soon as we hear more details.
