These CT scans reveal fantastic engineering inside instant cameras

Anything can be an artistic tool if you’re creative enough. While CT scanning is usually used for medical purposes, guys at Scan of the Month have used it for something completely unordinary.

In their latest series of scans, the team has performed CT scans on different types of instant cameras. Other than revealing the engineering behind each piece, the images look almost magical.

The project was released in November 2021 and it’s all about scanning everyday stuff most of us are familiar with. So far, they’ve covered Game Boy, LEGO mini figures, AirPods, and Instant cameras we’re sharing with you today.

The project is “about honoring the fantastic engineering that surrounds us every day but often hides in plain sight,” Drew of Scan of the Month reveals. “These hidden details make up the world around us, and behind all of them are engineers who labored over these decisions, products, and manufacturing.”

Polaroid and Instax cameras are “the scan of the month” for February 2022. The team starts the visual journey with Polaroid 600 AF, introduced in April 1997. The scans go all the way to the modern Polaroid Go, introduced exactly 25 years later.

“’The average instant photographer does not understand what is going on, to begin with, so how is he going to understand the significance of these technical improvements?”’ asked Eugene Glazer in the New York Times in 1981. “Well, we’re about 40 years late, but maybe we can help Mr. Glazer out,” the team jokingly writes.
